New venue in Newport
The old Studio/Club K site has finally been taken on with some promise and direction as the people behind The Really Good Bar Company bring their festival knowledge to this much missed/maligned space. Opening weekend (14-15th December) sees turntablist JFB dropping in with support from the Island's own Maxx Traxx, it's a free entry night as well. Tom and Nipsy are out to play the week after at The Loft's "End Of The World' party. See http://www.theloftclub.co.uk/ for more details.
Headfunk Christmas Party action at The Blacksheep
We return to The Blacksheep for our third annual Christmas Party on Saturday December 15th. Guest include our old friends and Bestival Main Stage stars The Playground Syndicate, Vectis Radio's own doyen of Rock N Roll Marco 'Luckyboy' Newlands, Sparrow, Missi Strut, Josh Brown and debutant Oz White. Tim's film club returns downstairs from 9pm with a Christmas theme, Tom will be opening upstairs from 9pm as well and he's going head-to-head with Nipsy for a Vinyl Showdown to close proceeding downstairs.
A-skillz returns
Galatic Events brought some much needed proper party action to Coburgs in Ryde at the end of November with a brilliant night of music headlined by regular Island visitor A-Skillz. Nipsy and Tom went back-to-back with Headfunk resident Josh Brown for the warm ups and Tim was holding it down all night on the visuals side.
New night starting soon
Keep your eyes peeled for a belter of a new night starting soon at The Blacksheep from some close friends of Headfunk. Called Bambaata, it will feature World Bass and Beats, the kind of sounds found emanating from the Rhumba Rum Bar at Rhythmtree Festival!
All for Charity mate!
The Samaritans is a charity very close to all at Headfunk Towers hearts so its with great pleasure that Tom is playing a couple of mini-dj sets between the bands at a great night of music on Friday 14th December at Northwood House in Cowes. The evening is headlined by Goodbye Stereo with support from Signals and The Golden Strands. Tickets are available from Quay Arts.
BLINDER OF A BESTIVAL
We LOVED our time at Bestival, and have just about recovered from a fun filled, musically packed weekend. With Nipsy and The Hat doing there bit to get the crowds dancing with various DJ sets at The Psychedelic Worm stage, and lots of our talented musician and DJ friends fully representing the Island Music scene. Special mention to PLAYGROUND SYNDICATE who had us all totally hyped during their mainstage slot. You did us proud.
Take a listen at our BESIVAL RADIO SHOW for a delightful lineup of tunes from local legends, a live mini mix from Playground Syndicate and live set from the gorgeous Black House Crow http://www.mixcloud.com/BestivalRadio/headfunk-bestival-radio-2012/
WINTER OF DISCONTENT?...NO CHANCE!
As the nights draw in and the prospect of the long cold winter fills people with dread we here at HEADFUNK have been busy planning lots of great musical delights to take the chill out the air... Our HEADFUNK PARTY NIGHTS have gone from strength to strength. Housed at The Blacksheep Bar in Ryde, we successfully partied the night away upstairs and down with the CaRnIvAl CrEw. We were more than happy to see that The Guardian recommended us as their pick of the week, amongst all the big city venues...who said nothing ever happens on the Isle of Wight?!
So dont be left out in the cold...our next night will be NOVEMBER 10th.
THATS NOT ALL FOLKS...
Those of you who know us will know we LOVE our live bands just as much as our DJ's so we're starting a BRAND NEW NIGHT. The HEADFUNK Live Sessions see's the very best of local music, being held in the intimate surroundings of The Wight Rock Bar and recorded live. Come on down and be part of Headfunk recording history. Headfunk Live Sessions Launch Party at The Wight Rock. This will then feed into The HEADFUNK LIVE Show going out Saturday evenings on http://www.vectisradio.com/
*STOP PRESS*STOP PRESS*STOP PRESS*!
We had the delight of getting an exclusive interview, and welcome into the Headfunk studio, 'Ed' the editor of the very clever 'Isle of Wight Candy Press'. http://iwcp.net/ With extremely clever, witty, and scarily truthful spoof articles about our beloved little Island, we have been addicted to the site since its launch at the beginning of September. Go check it out and be prepared to laugh out loud at their brilliant work.
Be sure to keep in touch as we have a few other things up our sleeves and under Hats hat coming up over the coming months...LOVE MUSIC...LOVE HAEDFUNK.
HEADFUNK SUMMER OF FUN
The weather may have been a bit disappointing but the musical fun has been in full swing so far this summer. Despite The Isle of Wight Festival being back in June its still fresh in our memories, and its been lovely to have people still talk about what a great time they had with us in The Dance Tent. We have to admit that you can still catch us mulling over the photos and videos of the weekend. With our amazing set up in the tent itself, a sound system to die for, and a wonderful team, the mud and general chaos of that weekend really didn't factor into it. We were in our own little blissful dance world for 4 days solid.
We can't thank all the DJ's and those who came along enough for really kick starting our summer. The feedback from those who attended and the festival organisers has been really positive, and as is the HEADFUNK way, we are always thinking so you never know what next year will bring.
FESTIVAL FUN CONTINUES AT RHYTHM TREE
The I.O.W Festival was just the start, with Zoe enjoying Camp Bestival, and Nipsy at V-Dub we are getting a good collection of wristbands for 2012. The best is still to come. Due to the sun refusing to shine for so long, our friends at Rhythm Tree Festival were forced to postpone. But all was not lost, and we are now looking forward to getting fully involved during Bank Holiday Weekend, 24th - 26th August. As well as the great acts from all over the globe entertaining us from the main stage, our own Tom 'The Hat' and Nipsy will be joining a huge amount of talented DJ's in the Rhumbarumbar. If that wasn't enough musical greatness there is also The Didge cafe with an array of fabulous live acts. In the beautiful surroundings of West Wight and renowned as one of the friendliest festivals, we can't wait to be involved again this year. Day and full weekend tickets are still available. For more info on this truly wonderful weekend check out the website http://www.rhytmtree.info/ and we'll see you there.
HEADFUNK CARNIVAL PARTY SEPTEMBER 1st
It seems ages since our 3rd Birthday bash at The Blacksheep Bar and Club Lounge - Ryde (although the memories of fun and rum remain fresh in our minds), so we are more than looking forward to our next night. After the success of the last party we will once again be doing a full takeover with two rooms of pure musical delights.
For Cocktails and dancing action upstairs, our great DJ friends we will continue the Carnival feel well after the precession has passed, with Reggae, Dance Hall, Soul, Funk and more.
Downstairs in The Mighty Sweat Box we will be helping to prepare The March Hare for his Bestival appearance (after winning the 2012 DJ competition), and re-living some of our highlights of The Isle of Wight Festival Dance Tent with the return of DJ Leeboi, and the legend that is DJ Andy Baillie. This is going to be one mighty mighty party night. Check out our events page on Facebook.
BOYS ON TOUR - FAT FREDDYS DROP
Tom and Nipsy escaped the island for a day in Bristol and who should they come across but the very talented Chopper Readz and Tony Chang from the brilliant Fat Freddy's Drop. To say the boys were excited was an understatement, as anyone who has listened to the HeadFunk Show will know just how much of a fan Tom 'The Hat' Headfunk is. Listen to the full, near on half an hour chinwag they all had together involving musical musings, Olympic chat, as well as the recipe for 'The Hat's Oak Leaf Home brew! http://soundcloud.com/tomheadfunk/headfunk-meets-fat-freddys

More details very soon on what's going on but we can reveal that Happy Feet will be joining us to bring a Hip Hop showcase featuring Born Ina Barn live, Playground Syndicate will be bringing their DJ/AV madness plus we have Josh Brown, Maxx Traxx, Missi Strut and Puzzle Muteson as well as many more to be announced. Our visualiser general The AV Circus continues his bid for world domination with his upcoming new film. He hasn't told us what its called yet but keep um peeled, it's sure to be interesting.
Christmas Madness!
Well all of us at Headfunk Towers have just about got over the craziness of our Christmas celebrations. Firstly there was the Headfunk Show Christmas special with DJ Nipsy co-hosting with the Hat, as a whole host of musical and radio friends descended on the Vectis Radio studios for a live bash. The following night saw the party move to The Blacksheep for what was easily the craziest night we have put on down there. Great sets from Cosine, Brown Noise and Elmo&Beavz showcased the finest in Bass music before The Hat and Nipsy played an hour of scratchy vinyl madness. Big love to all involved!
Live at the MeMo
A new gig series has just had it's debut in the lovely surrounding of the Freshwater Memorial Hall. Brought to you by Rhythmtree promotions the first in a series of monthly gigs saw Ric Harris Trio lay some hypnotic Jazz/Dub/Ambient grooves before Travel Sick Rick blew away any New Year cobwebs with a blistering set of raw hillbilly blues. The Hat was on hand to play some of diverse tunes and gibber in his own special way whilst sampling several local ales. Next gig is Saturday 18th Feb and more details can be found here: www.rhythmtree.co.uk
The Headfunk Beach Party returns
Yep, it's that time again. We can't resist a bit of random unseasonableness at Headfunk. Joining us at The Blacksheep will be Future Garage master Price from influential record label L2S along with former Bee and guitar genius Kris Birkini who will be playing a House set with live guitar. Also on the bill the Mademoiselle of Vinyl - Missi Strut and, of course, a Headfunk set. Join us and wearing a bikini for the night Saturday 4th February at The Blacksheep.
The Headfunk Top 40 of the Year
The annual marathon that is our Top 40 countdown returned to the airwaves over the festive period. If you didn't catch either of the shows the full countdown is coming to this website very soon but we can reveal the song of the year was festival anthem 'Another Girl' by Jacques Green. Island Artist of the year was also announced as Puzzle Muteson, who will be joining the Hat live on The Headfunk Show late Feb. Check the radio show section for details.
Headfunk Show returns to Bestival Radio (now with an extra hour!)
Yes, the lovely people at Bestival Radio enjoyed our Island musical show case so much last year they have asked us back and given us an extra hour. We are going to pack the show with the best music that we feels represents a cross-section of IOW music. We have two bands coming in for session on the show (keep your eyes peeled for news on who it is) and Bestival DJ Final winners Tickle Me Elmo will be coming in to do a live minimix. We can't wait! You can tune in from most places on the Island via 87.7 FM or through www.bestival.net from 12pm Thursday 9th September.
New venue in Ryde
It's been a pretty depressing year or so for venues shutting down. The Studio (also a few weeks as Hush) is gone, Temptations is once again closed, Ryde Theatre stands delapidatedly untouched and lovely Ventnor Winter Gardens is also no more. Ryde though seems to be having a renaissance in terms of venue space, with the skankiness of The Balcony morphing into Qube (looks nice in there but they need some punters!) and now, in a similar move, The Royal Squadron (well ok The Squaddie) is now Coburgs. It's opening this weekend after a couple of gigs on the sly to test it out so we shall see what happens.
V-Dub We-Love
A truly brilliant weekend was had by the Headfunk massive and many, many others at the first V-Dub Island Festival. Big love and shouts to Airon, Doug, Julie and all the Blunt crew for putting on such a belter. It was just what a Festival should be with great music, food, drink, company, friendly people, fires and lots to see and do. We had an absolute ball playing on Friday and Sunday nights so thanks to everyone who came and danced. See you next year!
New Headfunk musical moments
Busy times at Headfunk Towers. The radio show sessions site soundcloud.com/headfunksessions is full to almost bursting point with session tracks from the last year or so. Also on Soundcloud you can find some mixes and tunes by hitting soundcloud.com/headfunk-1 or soundcloud.com/headfunk_duke so go check and feel the magic.
Rhythmtree blows us away again
We had another beautiful and inspiring weekend at Rhythmtree Festival. This year we had the pleasure of curating, programming and producing the new third venue, Rhumba Rum Bar. We were delighted to be able to bring a whole host of wonderful djs with us to play sets of Rhythmtree sounds, with our good friend Tony AKA Global Psychedelic Soundsystem laying down the marker for us all. Only downside to the weekend was the hassle Gerry and Matt the organisers had to go through to get the festival licence due to a very small amount of blinkered and small minded party-poopers. If you are going to have a festival on your doorstep, Rhythmtree is the one. With easily the friendliest, most peaceful and relaxed crowd you would ever come across. No litter, no fights, no hassle, no idiots and not really much noise. A shame a small amount of rich people have so much power to stop something special, but we all still had an amazing time. So thanks Gerry and thanks Matt. Here's to next year and some friendly neighbours!
New musical website launches
Go check out new South-Coast based music website http://vectisradar.com its looking to spotlight all aspects of the local music scene.
Headfunk is 2!
Somehow we have managed to keep it all going for two years now, so to celebrate we are having a....well a party of course! And joining us will be some special guests to make it go with a bang and to allow us to get drunk while they do all the hard work. Starting the evening off will be a set from one of last years Bestival finalists, Sam Franklin, who has been itching to play for us for over a year. Take us on will be our good friend and many times guest, back to do what he does best - smash the dancefloor- DJ Elmo, but this time he is bringing his West Wight compardre Beavz along. Finishing off the evening, after a truly insane set last time, we had to get him back again...yes it Cosine for some bass-heavy craziness. Somewhere in the there, the Duke and the Hat will be dropping a set of Headfunk classics with Decks and FX. Its also Ryde Regatta weekend so this will be the Ryde Regatta Friday night afterparty. Oh yes...its also on a FRIDAY NIGHT so watch out. Headfunk 2nd Birthday Party, The Blacksheep, Ryde 1/7/11 10pm-2am free entry.
Headfunk at IOW Festival
We are delighted to announce that we are taking over the Disco Tent at this years IOW Festival on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. From Z-Skillz to A-Skillz
Saturday 12th March sees the return to the IOW of A-Skillz. Playing for Quality Control at the newly relaunched and revamped Temptations in Newport he will be bringing his dextrous, party-breaks style to once again rip it on the Island. Support for the night comes from Rustic Records Dj Mewtant, last months Headfunk guest Maxx Traxx and The Hat and The Duke will be doing their best warm-up set and trying not to get too drunk.
Headfunk Presents Cooly Haste, Kill The Pop and Cosine
Another night at the Blacksheep is upon us with three excellent and diverse special guests. Hip Hop MC and general party started Mr. Cooly Haste is joining us, but not to rhyme. Oh no, he is bringing his disco bag to spin a set for us. Expect classic electro, Hip Hop (of course) but also a whole raft of classic dancefloor specials. Also joining us will be Kill The Pop, after unfortunate technical difficulties last time out we had to give him another chance at serving up his electro-fueled stylings. Our last guest is Cosine, Dubstep/DnB badboy who chucks just about every style you can think of into a dj set. The Duke and The Hat will be doing their warm-up special before handing out the lollies, as the dress-up theme this time is 'Lipstick, Lollipops and Lycra'. Be there Saturday 2nd April from 10pm at The Blacksheep in Ryde and don't forget its free entry.
New festival hits IOW
Festival season is fast approaching and we are filling our weekends up with some very exciting events. One in particular we are excited about is V-Dub Island www.vdubisland.com which take place over the weekend of 19th-21st August. The line up is growing all the time and we will be involved djing and comparing.
Thank You Posh Bloodsuckers!
Be thankful we have a royal family this year as we get an extra days holiday out of it. To celebrate this (we don't give a monkeys about Baldy and Cat's nuptials) we are doing a one-off Thursday night special (all good because almost everyone has a day off on Friday!). It's also going to be a one-off bad-taste special , with the best(??!) wedding songs only being played. Yep, no underground vibes this time around just full-on cheese! And we want everyone dressed up in their best bad-taste wedding attire - ripped dresses and stained suits or even go for a royal theme (big ears and bald spots?). See you there! The Bad Taste Wedding Disco Thursday 28th April The Blacksheep, Ryde.
Headfunk in the Bay area
The Hat and The Duke will be moving and shaking in the West Wight on Saturday 15/1/11 for Tickle Me Elmo at Sandpipers Bar, Freshwater Bay. Its our good friend Dj Elmo's own night and we will be preparing the dancefloor for him and Beevz from 8.30pm onwards. He rolls like the Headfunk Massive so its FREE ENTRY! And there is decent beer!! What more reason do you need to get out to the wild west? Don't worry they are all very friendly over there and will only shoot you if you are a massive arse (don't worry Duke, just because your bottom is quite large that doesn't make you one).
Headfunk Show Sofa Sessions
We are uping the stakes on The Headfunk Show and showing our massive love for Island music by inviting a IOW band onto the show every week from now onwards. Check the show section of the website for more details.
Headfunk Show Top 40 of 2010
Over Christmas we did two very special shows running down our favourite 40 songs of the year. Go to the radio show section for a complete run down and the IOW bands of the year.
The Studio closes
We were devastated to learn the unfortunate news that top IOW venue The Studio in Newport would be closing its doors. Kev and Warren have been working their backsides of to turn around a venue with fantastic potential but an appalling reputation. It's such a shame to see them fail and we all wish them the best with whatever the move onto next. With the news that Ventnor Winter Gardens was also closing its been a bad few weeks for the music scene. The Studio will be a huge loss, with such a great soundsystem going to waste but ultimately not enough islanders got out to support the place. The years of mismanagement before Kev and Warren took over had put a curse on the place, despite the work put in to improve the look, feel, smell! of the place. Apathy is a huge problem for the island music scene and one we all need to counter with hard work and persistence. It ain't just about Facebook people! Get out and pound the streets if you want your band/night/venue to be successful.
Headfunk Presents - Maxx Traxx, KafTan, Fabrizio Delia 5/2/11
We kick of 2011 with a bang with the second in our series of 'Presents' nights. They will all be heading down to The Blacksheep Bar in Ryde on Saturday 5th February 2011 for The Annual Headfunk Beach Party. So don your boardies and bikinis and join us for a night of dancefloor destruction. As ever, its FREE ENTRY!!!!!! 10PM - 2AM
Headfunk Xmas Party 04/12/10
It's time for the tinsel again folks. With the Hat and the Duke playing house, techno, disco and more all night long. The Blacksheep Bar 4/12/10 10pm-2am Free entry! Your dress-up theme this time...Stockings and Stars - Shepherds and Sheep.

And also worth noting is that we now do our Blacksheep nights bi-monthly, next one 4th December. Check the upcoming section for details.

If you haven't heard, very good news for the IOW music scene - The Studio in Newport now has brand new, very switched on and motivated owners. They are throwing an official Reopening party on Friday 22nd October, featuring The Ohmz, Englane, Vanzatti, The Hall of Mirrors along with dj' Pushey and Maxx Traxx.
